Sunday Rewind

Posted: July 18, 2012 in thoughts

I encourage you to go to and listen to Mark’s sermon from 1 John 5:1-5 about overcoming.  Even if you were there Sunday, it is worth a “re-listen”.

We overcome by faith….sounds so easy yet can be a challenge.

Overcome (some translations will use conquer) is from the Greek work nikao….looks like Nike right?  It is an awesome title in the NT to be called an overcomer or a conqueror.  In Romans 8:37, Paul says that we are more than conquerors….we overwhelmingly conquer.  In Latin, it can mean that we are supermen/superwomen….all because Jesus has overcome the world (John 16:33).

So let’s not live defeated lives.  1 John 2:16 tells us how Satan operates—he appeals to the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in possessions.  So let’s not take the bait before us (James 1).  Let’s have faith in who Christ is and that He alone is all satisfying.

A key way that our faith is made strong is through being in the Word!  John says in 1 Jn 1:14 that they were strong b/c the word of God was in them, and they had overcome the evil one.  You see it?—-the Word made them strong and John says they were overcomers!

Dig in….have faith…overcome.

Be sure to read 1 John 5:1-5 for Sunday.  Mark is going to bring a great sermon and we are going to peel away some more layers, discuss the text, apply it, and learn from one another.

Here are some hints on what we will discuss:

See you Sunday.  Can’t wait!

I am a loser.  Becca emailed this link to me Tuesday asking me to post it and it is now Thursday.  Good job Greene!

Check out this link to sign up to take meals for the Ethridges’.  Cynthia is having surgery on both wrists tomorrow for carpal tunnel syndrome.

I think there are only three dates left, but one is TOMORROW!

Sorry for the late notice.
